Engaging vs Non-engaging abutments for dental implants: This is an often misunderstood topic for restorative dentists. I think this stems from most general dentists restoring single tooth implant crowns. When you do single teeth implant crowns, you always use engaging abutments so that is what you know. However, when you graduate to doing more complex cases that involve multiple units or even full-arch implant treatment, you must understand when to use which type of abutments. Single-tooth implant crowns should always have engaging abutments for their final restorations. This allows the hex to be engaged so that the crown will have less of a likelihood to have screw-loosening and biological problems. Multiple units should either use multiunit abutments or non-engaging abutments so that you can guarantee passive fit and not too much pressure on the implant neck.
