(23 Jun 1999) Natural Sound The atmosphere in Mitrovica is tense. In the city 30 kilometres (20 miles) north-west of Kosovo's capital Pristina, Serb civilians and Kosovar Albanians are virtually divided into two zones and shootings between the two groups are reported on a daily basis. There have been numerous incidents where Kosovar Albanians have entered property previously belonging to Serb civilians and forced the owners to leave. Albanians have been looting and setting fire to Serb and gypsy houses in the ethnically divided town. A few French soldiers stopped some looting on Wednesday but the majority just stood by and watched. Albanians could clearly be seen streaming across a field laden with goods taken from the empty and burning houses. A large number of weapons have been confiscated by the French troops from Kosovo Liberation Army (K-L-A) soldiers who have returned to their homes, as part of the agreement signed by NATO commander General Mike Jackson and Kosovar Albanian provisional prime minister Hashim Thaci.
