Sajid Javid has told MPs July 19 will be "the start of an exciting new journey for our country", as he vows to finally end the lockdown. The newly-promoted Health Secretary told the Commons there was "no reason to go beyond July 19", although he will not bring the date forward. In his first Despatch Box statement in more than a year, the former chancellor said: "In truth, no date we choose comes with zero risk for Covid. We cannot simply eliminate it, we have to learn to live with it." Businesses need certainty, and "every step must be irreversible", he added. "Make no mistake, the restrictions on our freedoms must come to an end. We owe it to the British people,... not to wait a moment longer than we need to. With the numbers heading in the right direction... July 19 remains our target date."
